INSECURE WRITER'S SUPPORT GROUP

IWSG Link
Many writers come to a crossroads when they decide whether or not to self-publish or to go the traditional route. When I decided to self-publish it was a decision based on accessibility. Either way you go, there is a lot of work involved. I'm getting ready to self-publish book number two and thinking back a lot of things have changed (for me). When I first signed up with Amazon and Createspace I was happy to just follow the instructions and I was just so excited that I was actually publishing my book! Now, I've taken much more time in the writing, the work that goes into the writing, researching, and really spending time in trying to get things right. I even downloaded GIMP 2.8 to create my own banners, teasers, and yes - I've even created my own cover art (which I'm so excited about)!

Teaser #1
One of the things that I've picked up on, since entering into the self-published universe, is that in order to have a successful release it's crucial to sign-up for a blog blitz, tour, or something along these lines. I've been working hard getting together my media kit for the release and launch for book two. There were times when the forward progression of getting the book finished and out there have been stalled (life throws wrenches in every now and again). But, you have to soldier through it and make those steps through whatever life tries to throw your way. A major step for me was booking the Cover Reveal and Book Tour. Now I have a specific date and goals to accomplish and work toward. It's an exciting time around here for us!

Teaser #2

Then, after the release and tour is finished I will jump right back in and continue writing. This year I've set a goal for myself: I want to publish two more works! This might sound crazy, while it might sound right to some, and other might think that I'm still in the slow lane. Either way, it's a goal and in order to be successful you have to set those goals to push yourself. In my scheduling addiction now, I've managed to create teasers for each "Teaser Tuesday" leading up to the cover reveal for the second book in the Going off Dreams saga titled For All in the Hope, December 2nd and the goal is to release the book on or before December 9th, 2014! It will be here before I know it - eek!

What are your opinions on these topics?

Adventures of a Self-Published Author

Since I launched Going off Dreams (through createspace.com a kdp (Kindle Direct Publishing), an Amazon company) this past February (02/12/13) it has been quite the learning experience. Of course I had the hope that my little book would be popular and people would love the story and characters as much as I do. In hind sight, there were mistakes that I made that could have been prevented. So, I thought I would compile a "Top 10" things to know before you click that button to submit your creation for live publication. Even if you are just considering, have an inkling, or have the faintest idea that you might want to write a book; I would read over this list. Of course, this is just what I have learned in the process and would highly suggest that you do your own research that is more targeted toward your goals, needs or to answer any questions you may have.

Top 10 List - What Every Writer/Creator Should Know

10.) Do Your Research - Start by going to Amazon and reading about their Kindle Direct Publishing program. There is a lot of information, don't be intimidated like I was, read through the site and take notes as you read so you know what you need to investigate more thoroughly. I wanted to get my book 'out there' as quickly as I could, I felt this almost crushing sensation with some urgency to have my book published. I would say proceed with extreme caution, take a few deep breaths, and take the extra time to do it right the first time, and you will cultivate better results. Compare Amazon's kdp with other providers for self-publishing and see which one would be a better fit for you. When you are doing your research, make sure you read both positive and negative aspects (if applicable) to get a true understanding of the experience, not just their perspective. KDP Author Community Link Q&A

9.) Edit - Edit - Edit - Something that I really wish I would have taken the time to consider is to have someone else edit before I had submitted it for publication. Especially if you are like me and have never really gotten along with writing 'grammar'. It is just something that has never really retained within my processing. However, there are services available to have your work edited. I recommend this too from experience. My very first review stated that my book had obvious grammatical errors that made it hard for the reviewer to continue reading, she loved the story, but the mistakes were unnecessary hurdles for her. While not everyone will be challenged with these obstacles, but to cater to your readers, I would suggest making their experience as pleasurable as possible. The only other advice I would give, on the other side of the spectrum, would be to keep the integrity of your work. So, if it is suggested that there is a grammatical error, but it could distort the flow of the story, then - as the author and creator - you have the ultimate say in how you want your writing to be presented to your readers.

8.) Know Your Target Readers - Talking about readers, know your target audience. What genre(s) are you writing? Join groups based on these genres and read and communicate with people interested in the same things. It will not only help tone your writing, it will also help build your audience. You can find out what your audience likes and dislikes, what they are hungry for and what they'll pay for! I know when I first published my book, I listed it as Science Fiction. After researching and talking to people about it, they described it as an apocalyptic fantasy. While it may have some attributes of SciFi, the book and series is more targeted toward fantasy.

7.) Don't Bombard Your Audience - Other suggestions that I have received have been that there were too many character introductions in my first book. While some readers might not mind, or even want the complexity, other readers can find this hard to navigate through the story. It was suggested to me to include an index or glossary of the characters for an easy reference guide. When you consider classic or popular series first books, while they contain a lot of information, it isn't overwhelming to most readers. The first book should introduce your protagonists and ignite the interest in the readers to continue reading the series. If you build their relationship with your characters, they'll be more likely to continue reading - makes sense, right?

6.) The Importance of Book Covers - The old adage might be "don't judge a book by its cover", but the reality is that when people are searching for books (especially on-line) they will be more apt to choose the book with the cover that interests them. My suggestion would be to do a search on books in your genre. For instance, when you search fictional romance, scroll through some of books and see what catches your eye. Considering your story, what should your readers be drawn to? What will engage them into the book?

5.) Getting Outside Help - Cheap is good and free is even better, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and pay for a service or two. While I have not been able to go this route (if I had the monetary ability) I would surely invest in services to contribute toward bettering my series. Whether it is getting help with editing your book or creating an eye catching book cover, two heads are better than one. Go into it with an open mind, but don't waver from the integrity of self-publishing. If you don't like it, you don't have to do it!

4.) Marketing Melt Down - Most providers that you publish your work with offer some form of marketing advice - read it all. Even if you can't afford their services, it is good to know your options. You can also use this information when you are comparing services and prices. When thinking about marketing options too, think about audience size. From what I know (which may not be much - har har har) Amazon seems to be in the lead, especially now that Goodreads has signed up as an affiliate. Their conversions will mean a wider array of readers and ease of use.

3.) Revelry in Reviews - A great tip that I learned right away, which can be bitter sweet, are reviews of your book. If you have not published your book yet, you can put feelers out in a beta form. This will give you feedback on your story and then you can tweak it and iron out any wrinkles that may need to be addressed before actually making it live and publishing it. Also, after your book is published, the more positive reviews you have the more likely new readers will consider your book to read. You can pay for reviews and that could be beneficial for both marketing and promoting your book. However, I would not suggest paying to receive a good review. This is a dishonest practice and damages the integrity of your work.

2.) Making a "Spreading Yourself Thin" Sandwich - Something to think about too when considering self-publishing vs. traditional publishing options is the amount of time that will be required within the commitments. When you publish your book, most people (myself included) want it to be a success. While self-publishing is increasing in popularity and awareness, statistically I believe that the outcome of a successful self-published book is probably low. While I don't know the perfect ingredients for success (yet), I do know that self-publishing your book takes commitment. You are definitely working, you just may not reap the monetary benefits right away. If you are working elsewhere, you could (you will) experience increase in anxiety or stress because of the demand it will require. There are so many opportunities on-line today to help you, it is just time consuming. My suggestion would be allot yourself specific time to devote yourself completely for both writing and promoting your book(s). If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a big bite out of your sandwich, step back, take a deep breath, and reevaluate.

1.) Problems With Self-Promoting - The 'problem' I have come across with self-promoting my book in the beginning was my limited audience base. In the beginning my audience consisted of my friends and family, who quickly burnt out with my constant stream of links to buy, like, or review my book. Network yourself, yes - this is going to be another time consuming process - but, well worth it. But, don't put all your eggs in one basket if you know what I mean. With today's social media, once something is viral, it has the opportunity to spread like wild fire. My suggestion would be (if you haven't already) join Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Goodreads, and any other means of communicating with a broad ranged audience. Investigate and add people that could potentially be interested in your book. For instance, on Google+ you can join a Mystery Group and post that you published your mystery book and include a link for your book. Then, when these people are looking through books - if they happen to see yours, they could be more tempted to read it. Don't hesitate to ask people to share, like, or "RT" (re tweet) what you are posting. Word of mouth can still be the mightiest tool in your shed.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Every morning, once I have made my first cup of coffee, I sit at my desk and start my day by checking my sites (I have quite a few of them). Most social media sites have the option for you to connect with other media, such as Twitter and Facebook. If you post something on Facebook it would automatically then be tweeted too. Something to consider; do you want to be a separate entity from your books? If you want to keep your personal life separate, then I would suggest not including your personal sites within your work sites. However, do include author biographies and information. I was informed in the beginning that this is what most people like to know.  When I was researching on-line about self-promotion, it was suggested in order to get your name "out there" was to not only join social media sites, but to also blog - which has lead me here - and here I shall remain *smile*.  While these methods take most of my time during the day, I have still been struggling with my allotted time in continuing to write and edit (currently I am editing my second book). But, then again I can be such a procrastinator! What better excuse in procrastinating then to have a blog that, if you don't feel compelled to continue to write and edit your book, you have the outlet to write about what you want to. It can also provide an outlet and almost therapeutic because you can write and work-through your current issues and challenges. Plus, people can give their advice, ask questions, or discuss their concerns as well.
Hopefully this has helped in some way - or at least has given you more information for your consideration. Have a question? Don't hesitate to ask! If I don't know, I can help you in researching it and finding an answer. Until next time or the next... dream ~ K.E.Nowinsky

Wondering Wednesday

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Today is the last day for the free promotional offer through Amazon Kindle for “Going off Dreams”!  Feedback that has been received is mostly positive (the only exception, grammatical errors).  Readers love the characters and the intertwining stories!
Looking at my reports, through Kindle Direct Publishing, I was really excited when units sold under the free promotion reached 100.  This morning that number increased by 35!  However, will the units sold continue after the free promotion is over?
Since the launch I have been working very hard promoting my book.  I have sent EPK (Electronic Press Kits) out to the surrounding venues.  Plus, I have been trying my best (without annoying people) to get the word out within social media.  I feel like (for now) that I am working so hard, with little to show for it.  Hopefully my efforts will not be in vein.
Since this was my first attempt, I know for the next book (For All in the Hope) – if I can generate some income – to have the composition professionally edited (a big IF there) – just grammatically.  I am certainly not the grammar police – and it has been brought to my attention that there are errors.  But, my concern was more in the story… what do you think?
Until next time or until the next… dream!

Chapter Two

February 19, 2013
"Going off Dreams" tomorrow is the last day of the free promotion through Amazon Kindle.
Here is the second chapter.  I look forward to hearing your questions, comments, and concerns.

Chapter Two

Déjà Vu

The wind blew my hair obstructing my view.  I reached up to pull my hair out of my face, closing my eyes, slowly breathed in… I could smell the fire… there was the burnt smell which was nauseating.  It wasn’t like the enjoyment of burnt wood, or a campfire, or the fresh smell of cut grass… this smell was of burnt chemicals… siding, drywall, and things being consumed by the fires.

When I opened my eyes there was a vehicular fire I could see a few yards away, raging.  The smell of plastics from the tires burning reminded me of the smell of drivers doing ‘burn-outs’ at the race tracks… the interior of the car was in smoldering destruction.  Blackened, dark hues that was crispy, flaking and defeated.

There was a slight breeze that attracted me to a glorious smell, one I did recognize immediately as that of the sweet smell of summer rain upon the wind.  The cool comfort of a drop of rain graced my face.  The rain fell like a blessing.

I lifted my hands, I could feel the kiss of the drops upon my skin and I closed my eyes and soaked in the gentleness.  It was a tenderness that was surrounded by desolation. Then the teasing drops gave way, the rain began to pour, as if the heavens opened their flood gates.

I could feel the wetness on my skin, like someone had dumped a huge bucket of water over my head.  The clothes that I had on were beginning to stick tightly to my body, constrictive and unyielding.  Coordinating with the rain, coolness pressed upon me and combined with the rain, a sudden chill presented itself and the feeling was intense as my body responded with shuttering.

The fires recoiled in reluctant defeat, and I was freezing – but the rain continued and quickly added to the quicksand that was escaping from beneath the earth and consuming and claiming all that it could as its own.  I immediately thought of the old movie ‘The Blob’, and was frightened.  As if it had read my mind, or sensed my feelings it stopped its advancements; but my conscious pulled me elsewhere.

This house that was being forced into my recognition, I couldn’t quite grasp the importance - but, considered the shelter a welcoming option.  I looked at the other houses, all dark and seemingly abandoned.  But this house, I recognized it only as the house from my previous dreams… the light yellow siding and black shudders… and a window lit… with light? Hhmm… that’s different, in a town full of darkness, it was teasing me calling me further toward its glow.

Quite curiously now, I took a step toward the house.  Something sparked, adrenaline pumping… this time swirling my body around instinctively toward that lurking feeling of someone behind me; glimpsing someone that plucked the corners of my mind in recognition… as his hand touched my arm – again… I suddenly felt the jolt of electricity course through my body and saw the sudden flash of brightness.

The familiarity of my body being sucked back into reality and lying stiffly in bed, the flash of light quickly adjusted to the darkness and coordinating with the storm that was dancing outside.  Again, it was taking some time for me to feel my own body… I lay in bed and could see it was 3:45.  I could manage my mind, and what I was thinking was “What the fuck!”…

I’ve dreamt of dreams before, reoccurring; and quite often déjà vu.  But this was crazy, these dreams felt so real.  So many questions flooded my consciousness; what happened, why was I standing where the lightning struck?  Who was the guy? Why am I dreaming this?

As the storm died down and the sky lit up outside my window, I looked out and couldn’t understand why I was dreaming this… the only logical thing I could think of was how people say “dreams reflect what your subconscious is trying to tell you”, but I could think of no immediate descriptive undertones of what it could be presenting in my life… and as the feeling of pins and needles unlocked my arms, I folded them around me and curled up in bed…

I had lain awake this time for quite a while, reeling and thinking of what had happened.  I never even realized it, but quite un-purpose-fully I fell back to a restful sleep – but only seconds before my alarm went off on my cell phone… don’t you just hate that!

Time would pass, everyday life would continue on, yet in the back of my mind the memory of the destruction, the complexity of feelings, and the stranger… who was he?  Every once in a while I would awaken from a feeling of life being sucked out of me, or freefalling and waking up with fright and the electricity pulsating through-out my body… Life did provide distractions, but the dreams always seem to stay rooted in the back of my mind.

Ordinary daily routines and activities have been harder these past few years, there are times you hear that we’re in a recession, other times it is referred to as a depression.  I know one thing is for sure my economic state is in a depression!  You work for the mundane finances like utilities, carp payments and insurances… which proved a vicious cycle.  You needed to work to pay for these things, and while the stress of life eats away your soul, you work – a slave to a faulty system.  We buy a car so that we can drive to work, we have to have insurance and all of this is taken away from the hard-earned pay check… the frustration is in the necessities.  Then, to make extra money to be able to pay for luxury things like food or going out with friends, you get a second job.  Meanwhile, the government feeds their greed off of the citizens they have sworn to protect.  However, only fueling their own political and at times illegal agendas.

My tax bracket is defined as ‘living paycheck to paycheck’, ‘bounced checks’, or even ‘overdraft account’.  What little money I do make has to go to such things as the electric and water bills.  Buying food is considered a luxury, the only upside to this is that if I don’t have food then I can’t eat it, if you know what I mean.  When I am hungry, a quick fix to the rumbling tummy is to drink a lot of water… if I need something with taste (and have the ingredients) tea is a great option.  It won’t last for too long, but it beats not being able to sleep because you’re starving.  When I can manage to have a few cash backs, I might treat myself to a value meal.

Another great distraction to the hunger is to keep busy, or at least I try to deceive myself into believing so.  I work two jobs, so there isn’t a lot of down-time for myself.  The pay within the educational field is bleak; I am low-man on the totem pole, so the pay is even worse than bleak.  But then again, I don’t work with the students for the monetary benefits.

But time goes on...  I would occasionally think of the person in the dream.  He seemed to be haunting my subconscious now… it was a mystery, a lingering one… unanswered.  Surely he could answer the questions that were plaguing my mind.

I was wearing my old sneakers, my legs were dirty and I had little scratches here and there, nothing recognizably serious; noticeable by wearing green khaki shorts, stylish with pockets and quite dirty.  Completing the ensemble I was also wearing a fitted shirt, a light yellow color… all sticking to my skin, soaked.

I feel wet and cold to my core… The scene all around me was as if time hadn’t passed at all.  I opened my mouth, and let the rain fall in… filling my mouth… it had been painfully dry and needed to quench some thirst… however, it tasted dirty, something wasn’t quite right…

I spat it out, and as it hit the ground, it added to the rain and earth that started to conjure all around, something in my mind reminded me of flash-floods and I turned towards the curious house, that had been haunting me inside… wanting to dash and crash through the front door before being stopped… I twirled around this time and struck my arms out – a flash blinded me, and a crack loud and deafening stuffed my ears; I stepped back - my eyes needed to adjust.

A man, lying on the broken sidewalk…

He had landed on his side and his face lay in the fallen rain.  I took a couple steps toward him as I reached out to try to turn him over.  I didn’t want him to drown, after all he seemed familiar, but I couldn’t quite put my figure on how.  It wasn’t easy work, but I managed to turn him over.

I started to wipe the mud and muck off of his face when he jolted awake!

His eyes curiously on me he placed his hands on my arm… I could feel the electricity, raw energy – but this time I didn’t wake from the dream.

There were no words.  I helped him to his feet and he looked at me, he definitely knew me and there was a kindness to his face.

I could feel something inside, it identified him and I could tell there was more… a past maybe?

His hands remained on my arm.

The rain had plastered his hair to his head; his hair was the color of something like dark hazelnuts, made darker from the rain.  His eyes were intense, and a brilliant green and blue-hazel, they reminded me of the clovers that grew in my parents yard; they weren’t big in size but they were expressive… it felt like they were piercing through me, I could hardly look him in the eye.

He had a straight edged jaw; it looks as if he hasn’t shaved in a day or two, but when he clenched his teeth together; the outline of his jaw was striking.

As a nervous habit I used my fingers to place my hair behind my ears, and felt a faint blush upon my cheeks.

Can he tell that I was looking him over?

I couldn’t shake the feeling that I knew him from somewhere.  My eyes were entranced by his presence.  His piercing eyes were looking at me in the same way.

We were definitely checking each other out… but more importantly, he knew me… it wasn’t connecting yet, where I knew him from…

His nose was attractive and masculine… we were standing in the rain…which started to slow in pace, now just a drizzle… but I watched slight moisture gather and wash over his face – caress his lips… they were a wonderful shade – this was all happening like if it was slow motion; I watched the droplets of water collect and roll down, and kissed his lips – I was thinking about being that rain and kissing those lips.

He released my arm the rain stopped… I seemed to snap out of it… it was like a trance.  I wanted to ask him questions, but I couldn’t speak… I had a million things going through my head… but I couldn’t form the words… there was a terrible feeling in my throat; it felt raw like I had suddenly developed strep-throat! And I looked at him, to see if he could speak… he moved his hands over his hair, wiping the rain out of his face along with it… I think he was waiting for me to speak first…

I was feeling dizzy, and he looked at me in shock, his eyes so expressive it made my heart leap suddenly into the pit of my stomach… I felt like I was waking up… he reached for me, and I heard him… he seemed to be yelling, but it was like a whisper in my ears…

“Aether!”

Behind the Scenes:

When I started writing about Eryn, I had originally scripted her with my name (or what my mom wanted it to be originally: Kristyna).  However, I decided against it.  I didn’t want the readers to associate the main character descriptively with the author (me).  A couple days into writing, I knew that I wanted to add my nieces names in it.  I have always thought that my sister did a fabulous job with their names.

Originally I had scripted in a parallel with my own life.  The draft helped me to understand more about story development.  Ultimately, I didn’t want to add my real life within this series and have been considering writing other works as well (that are a testimony of my life) non-fiction.

Recently in a Google+ discussion, the question came about of naming your character.  I have answered how I came up with the names in a previous post.  I truly enjoyed the process of building the character, then considering their attributes, researching names to match.  Avlov is a witte weiven (“white women”, “white witch”, “woman of knowledge”) hence she is all white.  Xylo is a word associated with wood; her character is described as have bark like skin.

What if you don’t like he name?  Do I have to go through my entire composition to change the name when writing?  No.  Depending on what software you are using to compose your work.  I personally use Microsoft Word®, this is a program that I have always used, and had to use with my on-line courses as well.  It is easy to change a mass amount.  When I changed the name Kris (from my original draft) to Eryn, you can click ctrl+f.  In the prompt type in the name you want to change; it should pull up every reference in the composition.  There is a drop menu that gives you the option of changing.  In the navigation window, in the prompt where the word is you’ll see and x and an arrow pointing down.  Click on the arrow and then select ‘replace’.  Follow the prompts.

Research and Development:

A reader (OK, my mom) suggested that I should have been more descriptive of the main character.  When writing Eryn, of course I am writing as if I am her at times, and then other times trying to convey the story and what is going on for the reader as well.

I didn’t want my audience to be bound by a definitive descriptive.  I gave a few hints as to what she looks like, but I ultimately wanted the reader to have control of their perceptions of what she could look like.

Trivia: Did you know that I have a nieces named after two of the main characters?

From what you have read and what you picture in your mind what Eryn/Nyx looks like?

What celebrities would you recommend for the character roles?

Until the next time, or the next… dream.

Happy Valentine’s Day <3

Behind the Scenes:

In 2008 I kept having a reoccurring dream, this apocalyptic scene.  Being a fan of another author, who had mentioned her popular series was based off of a dream that she had; I quickly started to jot down some of my dream.

Although there are only attributes from my dream within the first couple chapters; once I started writing, it took on an identity all its own.

In the book I mentioned how dreams can reflect something that is going on in our lives.  At this particular time, I knew there were problems within my marriage; problems that could not be worked out.  Hence, the subconscious dream of my world being destroyed.

The work that I started was put on the back burner for two years; after the divorce I reopened the creative processes and went to work outlining the following two books in the series.  During this time it was hard balancing working, going to school (on-line), writing, and taking care of my special needs son.  An opportunity presented itself, giving me the time to work on the first book, and look into having it e-published.

I had written the first book in a week.  Originally the main character’s life reflected my own.  When I started working on finishing the book, this past month, I decided to change that aspect; editing a lot out.  This gave way to introducing a new story line and great new characters.  The grammar still needs work; but, I think the story is descriptive.  I know I love these characters, the places, and the adventures.  I hope you will too!

Something that I imagine, in the world of comicon, would be individuals that love my creations so much that they dress up like them.  When I go into descriptive details, I can see it in my mind like a movie playing out, and I hope I convey enough that you can share in the imagination of the characters and realms.

In the coming days, weeks, and months; I plan on blogging about the series, character developments, and the process I went through in creating.  I look forward to constructive criticism in any spectrum.  Thank you for reading.

Until next time, or the next… dream.
